What’s Behind the Smiling Face in Front of You?

Written by Steve Wolf, Digital Marketing Specialist

I was at lunch with a friend catching up on our lives. You know the chatter — discussions about children, grandchildren, spouses, vacation, and more. Then the topic changed to, “How’s your sister?” When I shared my emotions surrounding dealing with an older sibling who has cancer, my friend responded, “How do you overcome that to get to work and function every day?”

This got me to thinking. I took a moment and pondered what might others have going on in their lives, some good and some not so good … a daughter who’s pregnant, a parent who’s getting older and needs support, a child with disabilities, a family member with cancer, the sale of a home, moving to a new neighborhood, sending a child off to a new city for a first job, the list goes on and on.

WOW, how do these people get up, get ready for work, and function productively? “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” — a timeless proverb that can be true for some, however, can be overwhelming for others. As Kathyrn Seifert, Ph.D. writes in Stop The Cycle, the simple answer is that those who function have enough support in their lives to overcome the hurdles of daily life as they know it.

The things that make a difference include:

  • Surrounding yourself with people who love and support you
  • Having opportunities to succeed
  • Experiencing and creating happy events in your life
  • Continuing on, putting one foot in front of the other, no matter what

Our culture allows us to develop networks of people who care for us and support us. At First Business we are all allowed opportunities to grow and succeed. We are encouraged to participate and support each other in wellness challenges, book clubs, walks, bike-a-thons, and summer outings that help us make genuine connections and friends.

Many of us believe that genetics and biological traits, along with a little luck, define how we deal with rough times. I happen to believe it’s what surrounds us that helps us cope. Families, friends, and community all contribute to how we deal with the tough times. A sense of belonging and purpose within a company whose culture allows us to cultivate the need to succeed in our lives is a big part of handling what comes our way.

Look around you … how many people work in your company, on your floor, in your department? Do you know the challenges they are overcoming to function today? How can your company help empower them?
